India's passenger vehicle market crossed 4.2 million units in 2026, making it the third-largest car market globally after China and the US. Maruti Suzuki continues to dominate with over 52% market share, but Hyundai, Tata, and Mahindra are closing the gap with aggressive SUV lineups and EV launches.

How the Ranking Works

This ranking is based on cumulative sales data from April 2025 to March 2026 (FY26) compiled from SIAM reports, manufacturer disclosures, and monthly registrations from Vahan. The top 10 models accounted for roughly 38% of all passenger vehicle sales in India.

SUVs Keep Climbing

SUVs now account for 51.7% of all passenger vehicle sales in India, up from 43% in 2023. Mahindra's Scorpio-N and XUV700 continue to have waiting periods of 4-6 months. Hyundai Creta remains the best-selling mid-size SUV with 1.76 lakh units, while Tata Punch leads the micro-SUV segment.

Key Insight: The top 3 models alone (Swift, Wagon R, Nexon) sold over 6.3 lakh units — more than the entire annual sales of the UK market's top 10 combined. India's scale is unmatched.

What Changed From 2025

Compared to FY25, the Swift overtook the Wagon R for the top spot thanks to the 2026 generation launch. The Tata Nexon moved up two positions on the strength of its EV variant, which now contributes 22% of Nexon sales. The biggest drop was the Maruti Celerio, which fell out of the top 10 entirely.

Electric Milestone: In FY26, every 8th new car sold in India had a plug. Tata alone sold 85,000+ EVs across its portfolio, with the Nexon EV accounting for 42,000 units.
